Trump is ‘gonna be president’ in 2028, MAGA leader bluntly declares: ‘There’s a plan’

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon insists that President Donald Trump will run in 2028 — and win.

During an interview with The Economist released Thursday, Bannon predicted that Trump is “going to get a third term,” ultimately based on the will of the American people.

“So Trump 28,” said Bannon, the host of the “War Room” podcast. “Trump is gonna be president in 28, and people just ought to get accommodated with that.”

When asked directly about the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which prohibits any U.S. citizen from serving more than two terms as president, Bannon pointed to how there are “many different alternatives” for Trump to stay in office, but did not provide specifics.

“At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is,” he said, adding, “But there’s a plan.”

Bannon continued: “President Trump will be the president of the United States, and the country needs him to be president of the United States. We have to finish what we started.”
He went on to call Trump a “vehicle of divine providence.”

“He’s very imperfect. He’s not churchy, not particularly religious,” Bannon said. “But he’s an instrument of divine will, and you could tell this of how he’s pulled this off.”

Although Trump has made several claims entertaining the prospect of another term, the U.S. Constitution prohibits any citizen from serving for a third time in the post. While speaking to NBC News in March, he did not rule out seeking a third term, and during an appearance on CNBC in August, he said he would “probably not” run during the next election.

Bannon questioned whether the 22nd Amendment clearly prevents Trump from running again.

“At some point in time, we will make sure we go through… and define all those terms,” he said, later asking: “If the American people, with the mechanisms we have, put Trump back in office, are the American people tearing up the Constitution?”

He also attempted to refute claims from critics labeling Trump as a dictator, pointing to the lead-up to the passage of his “big, beautiful bill” and “accommodating” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“President Trump is nothing but a series of negotiations to kind of keep this thing going forward, where he’s having trade offs all the time,” Bannon said.

According to a poll released in August by Data for Progress, a progressive think tank, 50% of Americans, including 59% of Democrats, 50% of independents and 42% of Republicans, think that Trump will attempt to run for president in 2028. Forty-two percent do not believe he will.

The poll also found that the majority of voters, at 69%, do not think that Trump should make a bid. The figure includes 77% of independents who fall in line, while 17% said he should throw his hat in the ring.

Per the poll, Republicans, however, remain more divided, with most favoring the idea. Fifty-three percent — the majority of GOP-aligned respondents — argue that Trump should run, while 44% said he should not. At the same time, 52% of Republicans claim that U.S. presidents should only be able to serve for two terms.
