Trump Indicates Potential Meeting with Political Rival Zohran Mamdani

Trump and Mamdani Consider Meeting Amid Political Tensions
Former President Donald Trump has indicated a potential meeting with New York City’s mayor-elect, Zohran Mamdani. Despite their stark political differences, Trump revealed that Mamdani “would like to meet with us,” expressing a willingness to “work something out” following a tumultuous campaign characterized by sharp criticisms from both sides.
“He would like to come to Washington and meet, and we’ll work something out,” Trump stated late Sunday, referring to Mamdani, a 34-year-old democratic socialist and former state assembly member who recently won the mayoral election. “We want to see everything work out well for New York.”
Mamdani’s team did not respond to requests for comment regarding Trump’s remarks on Monday morning. However, in a prior interview with News, Mamdani expressed his intention to reach out to the White House as he prepares for his upcoming term, emphasizing that “this is a relationship that will be critical to the success of the city.”
“I will be proactive in the work that I do,” said Mamdani. “Because of the responsibility I hold to eight and a half million people as their mayor, it is important to be open to working with anyone, regardless of disagreements.”
When asked about his approach toward Trump, Mamdani asserted, “I’m here to work for the benefit of everyone that calls this city home. Wherever there is a possibility for collaboration, I’m ready to engage, but I will oppose anything that comes at the expense of New Yorkers.”
The prospective meeting emerges against a backdrop of hostility, as Trump frequently criticized Mamdani during the campaign, labeling him a “communist lunatic” and even threatening to withdraw federal funding from the city. Trump suggested stripping Mamdani—who immigrated from Uganda and became a U.S. citizen—of his citizenship, a move Mamdani condemned as both an “attack on our democracy” and a warning to New Yorkers who dare to voice their concerns.
Trump had also endorsed Mamdani’s opponent, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran an independent campaign following his defeat in the Democratic primary. Throughout the election, Mamdani vocally opposed Trump’s policies, particularly those related to immigration reform. Still, he maintained a commitment to collaborate with the Trump administration if it would help address issues like lowering the cost of living for New Yorkers.
In his victory speech, Mamdani stated, “If anyone can show a nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that gave rise to him.” He emphasized the importance of dismantling the conditions that allowed Trump to gain power, declaring, “This is not only how we stop Trump; it’s how we stop the next one.”
Toward the conclusion of his address, he directly addressed Trump, saying, “Hear me, President Trump, when I say this: to get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”
