In a statement, Bush expressed that he would remember Cheney “for the decent, honorable man that he was,” adding that history would recognize him “as among the finest public servants of his generation— a patriot who brought integrity, high intelligence, and seriousness of purpose to every position he held.”

Wyoming Senator John Barrasso also honored Cheney, stating, “Wyoming mourns the passing of Vice President Dick Cheney.” He emphasized Cheney’s significant impact on both domestic and foreign affairs over decades.

While the White House has not yet issued a statement, Donald Trump, active on social media, has not commented on Cheney’s death. Lawmakers from various states also shared their reflections on the 46th vice president.

Ohio Senator Jon Husted remarked, “He devoted much of his life to serving the United States—from Congress to the Pentagon to the White House. He had an unwavering commitment to our nation’s security, strength, and founding values.”

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst noted, “Whether Vice President, Secretary of Defense, or in Congress, Dick Cheney was always proud to be an American. His commitment to defeat terrorism ensured there was never another 9/11. He served his country honorably and dutifully. May he rest in peace.”

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine reflected on Cheney’s contributions, stating, “He was thoughtful, steady, and an advocate for his beloved Wyoming. Our nation saw his leadership as US Secretary of Defense, directing military strategy during Operation Desert Storm. He will be missed.”

Senate Minority Leader John Thune characterized Cheney as a lifelong public servant who deeply believed in his country. “He brought his considerable knowledge and intelligence to its service,” Thune stated.

Cheney’s legacy is complex. His role in the Iraq War, controversial policies involving torture, and shifts in Republican ideology left him with critics on both ends of the political spectrum. Activists, including US Islamic scholar Omar Suleiman, expressed stark criticisms, remarking, “May the one million murdered souls of Iraq haunt you for eternity.”

Progressive commentator Hasan Piker called Cheney “genuinely one of the most evil people to exist in modern history,” criticizing the lack of accountability for his actions that led to widespread harm.

Far-right radio host Alex Jones echoed this sentiment, describing Cheney as “one of the most evil men in modern history,” while implying that his death represents a shift in the prevailing political landscape.

Former Republican congressman George Santos shared his views, stating, “Dick Cheney will meet his maker and will have lots of explaining to do. I won’t shed a tear for a war criminal of his ilk.”

Michigan’s former attorney general Bill Schuette recalled their time serving together, describing Cheney as “a good man, a unique statesman, and a proud American.”

Robert Doar, president of the American Enterprise Institute, noted Cheney’s influence, writing, “He was a force in the conservative movement and made a profound impact on our country.”

A few Democrats also acknowledged Cheney’s passing. Abigail Spanberger, a former congresswoman, expressed her prayers for Cheney’s family, while Representative Betty McCollum extended her condolences to Liz Cheney, praising her father’s role in defending democracy.
