D.C. to Deploy National Guard in Joint Patrols with Local Police Following Shootings

National Guard Troops to Partner with Local Law Enforcement in Washington, D.C.
In a significant development following a recent shooting incident involving National Guard members, troops will now be paired with local law enforcement on patrols across Washington, D.C. This announcement comes shortly after the tragic loss of Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20.
Shifts in Deployment Strategy
According to a report by News, officers will engage in high-visibility patrols alongside National Guard personnel and provide assistance as necessary. However, an email sent to district leadership indicated that the situation is “fluid,” and adjustments to this plan may still occur.
If implemented, this shift in strategy would represent a departure from the guard’s current deployment approach in the nation’s capital, which began in August. The previous strategy was credited by the Trump administration with reducing street crime rates, including murder and assault, by allowing law enforcement to focus on other pressing areas.
Coordination Between Law Enforcement Agencies
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has stated that they are working closely with National Guard troops to ensure community safety. An MPD spokesperson refrained from confirming any changes were currently in effect but emphasized the importance of coordination between law enforcement agencies.
Approximately 2,000 National Guard members are currently deployed in Washington, D.C., as part of the Trump administration’s “Safe and Beautiful Task Force.” It is important to note that these troops do not possess the same level of training as city police officers.
Response to Recent Violence
The recent announcement comes on the heels of tragic events that saw the shooting of National Guard members in D.C. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed that an additional 500 troops will be deployed to the capital following the incident.
The suspect of Wednesday’s shooting has faced upgraded charges of first-degree murder after Specialist Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries. Rahmanullah Lakanwal is also accused of shooting fellow Guardsman Andrew Wolfe, who remains in critical condition.
Tributes and Reflections
In West Virginia, state officials have honored the two National Guard members. Governor Patrick Morrisey requested that all West Virginians observe a moment of silence or prayer in Beckstrom’s memory and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff.
“These two West Virginia heroes were serving our country and protecting our nation’s capital when they were maliciously attacked,” Morrisey stated. “Their courage and commitment to duty represent the very best of our state.” The governor acknowledged Beckstrom’s service and unwavering sense of duty, highlighting her bravery and extraordinary resolve.
