Tim Walz Calls on Trump to Withdraw Agents from Minnesota: ‘You Can Put an End to This’

Minnesota Governor Appeals to President Trump for Federal Agent Withdrawal Amid Controversial Shooting
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz made a public plea on Sunday for President Donald Trump to withdraw federal agents from the state following the shooting death of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse monitoring immigration enforcement actions.
Crisis in the State
At a news conference, Walz questioned Trump, asking, “What’s the plan? What do we need to do to get these federal agents out of our state?” He expressed a clear mandate: “You can end this today. Pull these folks back; do humane, focused, effective immigration control – you’ve got the support of all of us to do that. Please show some decency.”
Walz, who is not seeking re-election, urged the public to reflect on the moral implications of the federal approach to immigration enforcement, particularly following the deaths of Pretti and Renee Good, who died just 17 days earlier.
Public Sentiment and Moral Responsibility
As both sides of the immigration debate seek to claim the moral high ground, Walz appealed to citizens: “Which side do you want to be on? The side of an all-powerful federal government that could kill, injure, menace, and kidnap its citizens off the streets, or on the side of a nurse at the VA hospital who died bearing witness to such government?”
Contradictory Narratives and Official Responses
Border patrol commander Gregory Bovino previously stated that Pretti “made a choice” by interfering with law enforcement, a comment that raised eyebrows given emerging evidence. Multi-perspective video footage has shown that Pretti never brandished a weapon and was allegedly disarmed moments before federal agents opened fire.
Bovino did not provide further speculation on the shooting, awaiting a federal investigation, while making an unsubstantiated claim that Pretti had threatened a “massacre.” State investigators from Minnesota were reportedly blocked from accessing the scene, leading to accusations from Walz of “sweeping away the evidence.”
Federal Pressure on State Authorities
As tensions escalated, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi criticized Minnesota officials for not enforcing the rule of law. In a letter, she stated, “You and your office must restore the rule of law, support ICE officers, and bring an end to the chaos in Minnesota.”
Bondi urged Walz to provide information on the state’s welfare programs and voter rolls, linking these issues to claims of welfare fraud costing billions. “I am confident that these simple steps will help bring back law and order to Minnesota and improve the lives of Americans,” Bondi concluded.
Tensions Beyond Minnesota
The fallout has broader implications as tensions between local and federal law enforcement policies have emerged across the nation, including in Maine, where Cumberland County Sheriff Kevin Joyce criticized ICE for conducting aggressive enforcement actions during a traffic stop. Joyce expressed frustration over the federal agency’s methods, saying, “This is not what professional policing looks like in this country today.”
