Mamdani Reiterates That Trump Is a ‘Fascist’ Just Days After Cordial Meeting

New York City Mayor-Elect Declares Trump a ‘Despot’ Amid Unlikely Cooperation
In a recent interview, Zohran Mamdani reiterated his stance, labeling Donald Trump a “fascist” despite an unexpected cordial meeting at the White House.
Firm Stance on Democracy
Speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, Mamdani reaffirmed his view of Trump as a threat to democracy in America. He stated, “Everything that I’ve said in the past I continue to believe. It is important in our politics that we don’t shy away from where we have disagreements.” This reflects a broader public opinion that is increasingly focused on the implications of government policy and political strategy.
A Light in Political Darkness
During his victory speech on November 4, Mamdani expressed hope for New York as a beacon of light in troubling political times. He challenged Trump directly, saying, “If there is any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the very conditions that allowed him to accumulate power. So, Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: turn the volume up.” His words underscore the ongoing struggles surrounding civic engagement and advocacy for election reform.
Unexpected Agreement
The anticipation surrounding the White House meeting was high, given Trump’s previous harsh words for Mamdani, referring to him as a “communist lunatic.” Contrary to expectations, the meeting yielded warm exchanges. Trump expressed confidence in Mamdani’s leadership, stating, “I think he’s going to surprise some conservative people, actually.” They discussed key issues such as housing, food prices, and the cost of living, reflecting a rare moment of bipartisanship in current political campaigns.
Focus on Delivering Results
Mamdani emphasized the need to focus on effective governance during their conversations. “It was a conversation where we spoke about the need to deliver on this agenda,” he remarked, appreciating Trump’s efforts to provide a tour of the Oval Office and engage in direct discussions about policy differences. Their dialogue signifies a potential shift in how differing political opinions can coexist amidst challenges facing democracy in America.
Handling Law Enforcement Issues
Mamdani also tackled inquiries about his decision to retain Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, a holdover from former mayor Eric Adams. He praised her record in reducing crime across the city while addressing corruption within the department, a critical issue in political strategy. “She has driven down crime across the five boroughs while starting to uproot corruption that was endemic,” Mamdani stated.
Mixed Opinions on Policing Strategy
Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, expressed approval of Mamdani’s decision to keep Tisch, suggesting it indicated a commitment to law and order in New York City. “We are really reassured that [Mamdani has] kept the police commissioner. In previous administrations in New York, we have seen law and order really go south,” Hassett remarked during an interview.
However, Tisch conveyed in an email to officers that while she and Mamdani have differing views, their common goal remains the safety and security of the city. “Do the mayor-elect and I agree on everything? No, we don’t,” she noted, highlighting ongoing debates in governance.
